PLATE-WAYS FOR MOTOR TRAFFIC
<, At the recent annual meeting of the British Science Guild, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu made an interesting suggestion regarding new roads for fas'J motor traffic. He proposed that "plate-ways," consisting of iron plates or concrete two feet wide should bo laid dowm to form an efficient bearing surface for the wheels of motor vehicles. Properly constructed, s-iinli plate-ways would halve i tiho tractive effect required, to propel a 1 vehicle, as compared wlith what is I necessary on a first-class macadam road. He reckons that the cost of construction would bo half that of a singlo line of railway and that tho expense of operation would bo very much lower.
