HIDE AND TALLOW SALES

The fortnightly Bales of hides and tallow woro held yesterday by various brokers:Messrs. Dalgety and Oompajiy, Limited, submitted an average catalogue of all olaßßes to a good attendance, of .buyers. As compared with prices ruling at last sale, oi hides showing quality and substance, advanced up to Id., whilst there was a distinctly improved inquiry for inferior sortß of nil hidcß. Beat calfskins were advanced up to 3d. per lb. Tallow was in fair demand, and was on a ipar with last Bales' rates. The Now Zealand Loan and 1 Mercantile Agency Co., I,td„ offered a largo catalogue of hides, moderate quantities of calfskins, and. a small quantity of tallow. Tanners were oager buyers of all good lots of hides. Prices were a shade better than thoße ruling at our last sale, oxcept for tallow, whion was not in great demand. Messrs. Murray, Eoberts and Co. 6ub-1 mitted a good catalogue of WOO hides to a largo attendance of buyers. Competition for Bound hides was keen, at about a halfpenny per lb. above last sale's fates, for medium and heavy ox, light-weights and cowb selling at par, with an occasional advance up to a halfpenny on some choice lots. Light kip showed an advance ol Id. por lb., and calf woro occasionally slightly dearer than -la fortnight ago. There were no epeoial lots of extra stout hides catalogued, but the general tone of the market woe harder. The Wairaraipa Farmers' Co-operative Association, Limited, report that, compared with the sale on Augußt 13, prices for in* dium and light ox hides were firmer, and showed a Blight advance. .Cow hides were on a par with last tale prices, sound calf, first quality, was higher by 2d. to 3d. per lb.; cut and slippy lines allowed a slight improvement on last sale, tallow was easier, and it considerable quantity was passed in. ■ Mesßrß. Abraham and Williams offered a a good catalogue, including Bomo nice lines of calfskins, to a full bench of buyers, who competed very keenly for all sound hides, but inferior sorts wero again hard to dispose of. All grados of sound ox and cows showed a further rise on last sale's rates, owing to spirited competition by overseas' representatives. Ualtskins also improved! to the extent of 2d. to 3d. per lb. Dalgety and Company, Limited, received the following cablegram from their London house, under date of August 25-—"Tallow: 1370 casks were effered, and 65 sold, at about 2s. to 3s. decline. Messrs. Levin and 00. report that they submitted a good catalogue of super-con-ditioned hides to a full bench of tannersaud exporters. Priceß were somewhat erratic at times. As compared with last sale's rates, prices realised in tho majority of inßtanccs showed an improvement In sellers' ■ favour.
