CANTERBURY MARKET
By Telesrsnh—Prens Amoelatlon. Christchurch, August 27. There has been renewed mterost. in the potato market on account of the reported probability of tho embargo being removed by the Commonwealth Government. Although the report to this offect haa 'been contradicted, tne opinion is that it orrs only in being premature. In any case, numerous inquiries have been cabled by Australian merchants. Values consequently have primed up, and sales wore made to-day at .41 10s., 5.1., f.0.b., about XI higher than tho preceding week's. Prices to growers at country stations are now about £1155., as against 30s. and Sis. previously. A shortage developed in Auckland during the week, but this will be relieved bv tho Waitomo'e shipment to-day, which from Lvttelton alone totalled 15,900 sacks—sufficient for about three weeks' normal requirements. It was the Auokland shortage that stimulated local values to a large extent. Oats are very depressed, ana business is practifcally nil. Tho price to farmers has suffered a further drop. Onions are in request, and up to -CIO would be paid for good sound sorta.
