WOOL PROFITS

Sir,—l daresay it will interest many of tour country readers to know that a report has been circulated by the Sydney "Evening News" that Mr. Hnglies. the Premier, Ims' been able to substantiate a claim upon the Imperial Government of ten and a half million pounds sterling, in respect of a breach in the half-profit clause in the commandecr wool contract by the 6ale at "civil issue price" or about half the market value, of 450,000 bales, described by Mr. MaoIcinder as Australasian, but claimed by Mr. Hushes as Australian wool. The Produce Department here might be able to ascertain if any or what proportion of these bales are of New Zealand origin, and, if so, our contract has been broken as well as tho Australian as I assumed it bad-been for other reasons as well as this. The same paner claims that a sum of no less than ,£157,000,000 has been contributed. through tho Australian wool commandeer, to the Imperial Government for war purposes by the squatters and sheep farmers of-Australia. The difference ltftwcen Mr, Hushes and Mr. Watt seems to hinge upon these wool contracts, as tho former who was at. Home at the time, took serious objection to the mode of handling them by his lieutenants and has scored by being able to enforco the above claim—T am, WM. MILNE.
