' FORGERY BiT A CHINESE LAD. Mr. W. G. Riddeill, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday and dealt with the police cases, A Chinese lad named Thomas Chin Ting pleaded guilty to forging the name of W.'Kwong Lee-to'a cheque-for £20 on the Uniou Bank. The iad, who had been educated at Wellington Ooliege, had been staying at tlie Grand Hotel, and forged tlio cheque and tendered it to;the clerk at the hotel in payment.of board for a. week, recemng about £15 in change. He was committed to the Supremo Oourt for sentence. Sinclair G Cook.:waß fined 405.. in default seven days' imprisonment, for stealing a handbag valued at'£2\lss.
■A fine of 20a., iu default three days' imprisonment, was infiloted on Mary Lonnie, who was convicted of stealing a book aha a silk blouse, value 355. Her statement was thai she was employed at a house in Kelburn, and was given somo rubbish to burn. The goods were among the rubbish, and she thought them too good to burn, so retained them.
Two young men, Leonard S. Griffiths anti Leslie L. Valentino, were charged with being rogues and vagabonds in that thev were found by night'in the yard of M'Carthy's buildings without lawful excase. fir. H, H. Cornish appeared for both accused. They wore convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when calleil ujJon within a, period of slx'months. Valentine was further charged with stealing a razor, value Us. On this charge he was fined 20a„ in default seven days' imprisonment. Henry John Mercer, 18 years of age, was charged with tho theft of a tin of benzine value. 17s„ also that without any lawful right and without' any colour of excuse he did take 'and use a motor-car' from the premises of the Wellington Motor and Accessories Company, 5 Dixon Street, and did damage to same, to the extent of £55. The lad had been employed by the company, and on Saturday last he went to the premises, getting in through a window, and took the car out together with the benzine. The car was recovered on Tuesday in another garage. Mercer, for whom Mr. TV. Ferry appeared, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in £100, and ono surety of a like amouut. A remand for a week was granted in the ease of Cecil J. Turnbull, 'who was charged with the theft from tho dwelling of Jabcz Babmgton of one gold chain, a metal watch, silver matchbox, and rolled gold locket value £2 17s. 6d., the property of Harold Paaski; also with attempting to defraud Thomas B. Pago of 30s. by falsely representing that he was expecting money from Invercargill, John Keegan and Hobert Sellen, memhers of the orew of tho s.s. Hororata, admitted absenting themselves from the ve<=eel without ileave. They were each fined 10s. and 7s. costs, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Robert 11. Boss, who was arrested on the arrival of the s.s. Manuka from Sydney ■ w " c v aT ged. with deserting his wife ami child m Sydney on August 5, and an an. plication for .extradition was.made. Mr ' A - B ' Sievwneht, who appeared for Roast opposed the application on the grounds lliat Boss had. made amplo provision for the maintenance of his wife and child, that all payments agreed to bo paid had been paid, and that tho warrant from Sydney was not in order. Tlio defendant gavo evidence, but the Magistrate held that he must order the extradition.
