Thosh who neglect to register the birth of children within tho time provided by lav.- were given a warning in the Magistrate's Court yesterday when the fathers of two infants were charged before Air. J. K. Evans, S.M., with fai.iux to rcaistei the births of their respective initials. Sub-Inspector Bme'rsou said. that the cases were brought not so much to have the parents punished as to give a warning to the public. ■ Frederick M'Sweeney, ono of the da icuJanla, said thpt he understood that the nurse attended to the registration, and he therefore did not trouble about th« matter. He was collected and ordered to pay 9s. costs. Tho other defendant, John Peddej. did not- appear. J.t was stated in evidence that he notified the Hejjistrar of tho birth and wanted fo know if he coufd depute Bomeone to effect the registration, otherwise he would bo obliged to lose a day's work if he hud to attend tn the registration h'imself. He was sent a form to iill in. but had done nothing in the matter since. I'ctldcr was fined ss. am) ordered to pay !)s. costs. A third-defendant, Percy M. Dronfield did not appear. The Kegistrar wished to tender as evidence certain statement* made by the defendant, but the Magistrate said it was necessary to prove tho birth of the child and that tho defendant .was the father of tho child. In order that this might be done the case was adiourned for a fortnight. In M'Sweeney's and Fodder's cases tho Magistrate ordered that tho birth of the children should now bo registered, lor ■without such an order registration could not be effected, as more iftan £ixtv da.vs had etopsed 6inco the birth of the iu ; fants. Besides registration within sixty days, the Registrar must'be notified of the birth within three days.
