HIDE AND TALLOW SALES

The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow .were hold yesterday by'the various brokers :— Messrs. Palgety and Co. report thats there was better competition for all sound ntdos, and medium and heavies advanced about Id. per lb.; other sound descriptions maintained late rates. Inferior hides, .particularly badly slippy, are extrom6ly diffloult of sale. There was slightly hotter demand for tallow, and we clearad a few parcels at Blightly increased prices. , • ' Messrs. Murray, Eobcrta and Co. submitted a catalogue of WOO hides to a large attendance of buyers. Competition waß animated at a, halfpenny to three-far-things advance on best lines of ox. Cows were erratic, light-weights bejng slightly easior; medium and heavy, par to a farthing higher on some Mb. Wet and slippy, and inferior lots, were dull of sale at a lower range of values. Tallow was caßier by 20s. to* Ms. per ton. Messrs. Levin and 00. adviso that they oubmitted a good oataloguo ofi Mipcrconditioned hides to t.ho usual attendance of tanners and exporters, and prices were somewhat erratic. As compared with the valuos current at tho sale- held a fortnight ago thero was a slight advanco all round The tallow market was qulot, with practically no Inquiry. In comeouence of shippors, and local manufacturers showing little disposition to operate, tho majority of tho offerings wcro withdrawn from sale. Calfskins, (first quality, wero lower Id. to Zd. per 11, All eut and-Hippy lines, wero irregular and below level of last sale. Agency Co., Ltd., state that prices _ for heavy hides and calfskins wero a little bottor than at last sale. Medium and light hides wero disposed of at.prices at a par with last sale. Damaged hides ond calfskins wero again neglected. Tallow olicitod rather better bids than havo been ruling lately, but the market is Btlll very poor, and speculators wero disinclined to operate. ■' Messrs. Abraham and Williams report that a full bench of. buyers oompoted keenly for all good lines of hides, but neglected all inferior grndes. Values for all grade* were on a par with laßt sales, with the exception of medium welghtß, which wero firmer to the extent of Jd. to Id. per lb. on laßt sale ratOß. Inferior and slippy hardly elicited any competition. Tallow was again very low, and very fow linos wero disposed of. The N,Z. Farmers' Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., report that there was again a. very weak market for hides and calfBkins of all descriptions, and prices, compared with the sale held a fortnight aeo show a furthor drop of •> Id. to 2d. In most instances. Tho tallow market wu» also exceedingly flat, arid only a few lines were diaposed of at prices slightly below last, auction.
