PUBLIC OPINION AND THE "C.W.S."
1 Sir,—ln view of certain criticisms of the "C.W.S." by Major, Norton on his I return from tho Old Country, I would bo obliged if you would give publicity to the following statements by speakers at tho annual congress of tho Co-opera-tive Union held in Bristol, commencing on Whit Monday. The Lord Mayor of Bristol (Mr. J. P. Francombe) said that "he had como to give the delegates from tho bottom of his heart tho heartiest welcome to the most beautiful city in the world," In the name of tho citizens of Bristol he said "God bless co-opera-tion in every form." The D«in of Bristol, tho KfV. Dr. Wynne Wilson, said: "Years ago he had lived in a Midland town, and was a- member of the Co-opera-tive Society. Two points struck him about this great movement, which was one of the miracles of modern economio histoiy. The one was its encouragement of thrift which ho believed to bo the foundation of the social fabric and tho other wa6 that it made for fellowship, which could only bo achieved by ft''community of interests. With all my heart I bid you God speed." The Arohdeacon of Swindon (Rev. Canon Talbot) said 'ha and his wife had been co-operators for 25 yearn Ho had known co-ciperation up and down the oountry at Tceside, Wearside, and in tho Midlands, and in the south, and tho more ho had seen of it tho better ho liked it. Its principles entirely captivated him, ,and its practice was very fine." - , Tho Bishop of Bristol, m a special sorroon to tho delegates, stated: They x stood for tho groat principle' ot individual contribution for tho commou good of all. It was their creed, tho ideal which' guided them; the powor which inspired them and the method jvhicli directed their efforts, and right nob o and uplifting was such a creed. It marie an appeal to tho individual to consecrate his powers and his possessions to a higher service than that of self.'', This, Sir, is tho movement that the vested interests of Tooley Street and ihis Dominion Standen Street, Karori.
