JOCKEYS' DISPUTE
TRANSPORT WORKERS WITHDRAW SUPPORT. The lifting of thle embargo on the transport of racehorses was announced yesterday by the secretary of tho Transport Workers' Advisory Board (Sir. J. IWberts). It will bo remembered tlmt the transport workers declared some time ago tnat they would not handle racehorses or racing material until the Racing Conference had recognised tho Jockeys' Association and arranged a settlement with that organisation. This decision tins been enforced on various occasions, but the jockeys themselves have continued to ride wider the old conditions, and have not given any active support .to tho transport workers. The following statement was issued yesterday by tho secretary of tho Transport Workers Advisory Board (Mr. J. Roberts) s— „ , "The New Zealand Transport Workers Advisory Board, 'at its _ meeting _ this morning, considered tho jockeys' dispute, and decided to remove any embargo in connection with 'carrying racehorses to and from any part of Now Zealand. This decision was arrived at in view of the fact that a great number of jockeys were in favour of the embargo on racehorses being lifted. Tho jockeys' disputo has beon before the transpdrt workers for a considerable time, and owing to the fact that .the jockeys themselves seem _ to bo somowliat divided over tho issues involved, tho transport workers could not undcrtako to proceed-further with the case until there was a moro unanimous opinion between tho members of tho Jockeys' Association." This announcement means that tho Jockeys' Association, the originnl organisation of tho jockeys, lias lost its fight. Tho memherslup of the association hns been much reduced during recent months, and the Racing Conference, through its president (Sir George Clifford) has conducted negotiations with jockeys outside the association. Jfany of tho prominent, riders are now outside tho association, and the withdrawal of support by th« transport workers will leavo tho associa' tlon in a much weakened position.
