SAILORS' DILEMMA
frA LANDING REFUSED OWING TO IMMIGRATION RESTRICTIONS By TelegTaph-Preßß ABBoclation-OoDyrleM
(Rec. July 25, 5.5 p.m.)
Vancouver, July 23. Three sailors shippgirat Sydney in the Canadian Importer to replace deserters were not allowed to enter Canada under the regulation prohibiting the admission of,unskilled labourers generally. This is the home port of the vessel, therefore the men will be paid off under the British Boarxi of Trade rules. The Australians'must return as passengers to the port of engagement. If returned under the immigration regulations they become technically distressed British seamen, and will probably be refused a landing in Sydney and returned to Vancouver ad infinitum. Two firemen in the same case were allowed to land, undertaking not to work here but to leave by the first chance ocean-going ship engaging them. Ottawa is considering the matter.-Aus.-N.Z.
