During the quarter ended Juno 30, tho Wairarnpa. Patriotic Asicciation paid out the sum of j877G5 lGs, lid. Of this ,£7137 7s. 6d. was advanced in loans and ,£G2B 9s. sd. iu casli grants to soldiers and' their dependants. Moneys received totalled <£iiOGG ss. 9d., repayments amounting to ,£4OBI 7s. 6d., collections ,£ll4 7s. Ud.. interest 011 capital .£702 18s. 10d„ and rent from Ohaikciika soldiers set-, tlement i£l(i7 ss, 9d. The market for sheep and cattle for grazing purposes is particularly keen in the Wiiirarapa just now. Numerous inquiries for stock have come from Hawko's Bay j-and'as far north as the Waikato; the local demand is brisk, and outside buyers are obliged to wait their turn. (Wing to a change in ownership, tlie Fea-therston Defence Rifle Club has had to relinquish a permisslvo tenancy held for the past 25 years of a rifle range on a property of tho late Mr. Bruco Speedy. It is understood that the links o;i the same properly used by tho Eeatherston Golf Club will also be closed at the conclusion of the present season. The Minister of Education (Hon. C. J. Parr) ha-s notified the Masterton Progress League that steps are being taken to constitute a Board of Governors in •connection with tho proposed Masterton High Sohool. Special legislation may, however, be necessary before the board can be selected. , Since I its inception, the Wairarnpa Patriotic Association lias advanced ,£43,283 in loans to soldiers am! their dependants. Of this sum X12,'24fl has been repaid, and .£31,043 remains outstanding. 'i'ho credit balance of the association at June 30 was Ji53,73fi. Tho W&irarapa Soutli County Council held a special meeting at Carterton on Thursday for tho purpose of deciding what 6hould be done in connection with the main road. The overseer submitted an estimate for metalling, but members of the council were adverso to expending a large sum that might not result in a permanent improvement. It was finally decided to employ an engineer to go over the route and prepare an estimate for tar-sealing the road, with a view of raisiug a special loan for the purpose. >A committee was appointed to carry out tho resolution, and also to have necessary temporary repairs done to the main rond. At a meeting of tho Carterton District Progress League it ires decided to ask tho-member for the district to support tho Daylight .Saving, Bill now before Parliament. The league has a membership of 45, and the following officers have been elected: President, Mr. G. Hush an; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. C. Deller and A. M. Broad Gent; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Plercming; committee,' Messrs. J. W. Ellis, J. Mem, ming A, J. Par.tin, P. -E. Tyler, R. Selbv, J. A. Cowles, and W. Howard Booth. Tlie Wairarapa Rugby Union has declared the senior championship closed.
