ORGAN RECITALS
Sir,—As a visitor to New Zealand, 1 6hould like to agree with your Mayor's well-expressed remarks in connection with the organ recitals (published in to; day's Dominion). The brilliant playing and musicianly interpretations of your city organist will form one of my pleasant recollections of Wellington. Wli/ should the faithful two hundred be punished for the sake of those who won't use their ears, and so find enjoyment; in second-rate performances of the latest music hall rubbish? Thoso who can. appreciate good music should not be deprived of it altogether, which would nanpen if organ recitals were abolished whr»e there is no permanent <pera, chamber music, or healthy tompetiKon between important musical societies. For. some time, British communities have, iieen inundated with rags, jazzes, and alleged musical comedy, which have steadily lowered the' taste of thousands. Those who stick to their guns and uphold' high musical ideals deserve encouragement instead of cold water in their uphill fight.—l am, ctc„ MUSIC-LOVER. . Wellington, July 23, 1920..
