BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP

Tli3 Zealand aniateur billiards championship, which is being held in Wellington under the auspices of tho Federal Club, commenced yesterday afternoon at Messrs. Aleock and Co.'s showrooms Mr. Searle (the president of the club) welcomed the visiting competitors. Mr. Owen (tho reforeeO Announced that he had tested the table and balls thoroughly and had found everything correct and in strict accordance with the requirements of the British Billiard Association specifications. The games are all 650 points up -with tho exception of the finals, which are 1500 points. The opening game was between \V. N. Tucker (Wellington Federal Club) and C. Roberts (Auckland Sports Club). The visiting player had only arrived an hour or so before tho game commenced, and at the start did not play up to his form. Tucker, cueing nicely, led during the first half, of the game, but after this Roberts improved very considerably and was ablo to overhaul his opponont and gain a substantial lead. Both players secured lepeated applause for clever shots and briliiiint play. Tho came ended: Roberts 650. Tucker 470. Tho best breaks were: Hoborte 2*. 30, 22. an, 59. 27. jil 52 and 32. I'nc.Vcr 23, 20. 30 and 40. In the evening Arnold Williams (Federal Ciub) played A. Wakem (Auckland" Sports Club). Both men showed signs of nervousness at tho commencement. Later, however, when tho angles thrown by the match balls woro mastered, they 'tini'proved considerably and showed evidence of great skill. Williairs in particular played a very lino all-round game, and at times very nearly reached his form of a few years back. Towards tho end of the gamo Williams drew well away, winning by nearly 100 points, the. stores being: Williams GSII, 'Wakem 554. The best breaks were: Williams 23, 67, 52; Wakem. 21, 23, 22, 20. To-day nt .10 a.m. Frodatdvich (Auckland) plays Scrivener (Waiigaiiui); at 8 p.m. Mathias (Auckland) plays Warren, ani! this evening at 8 o'clock Telford (Wellington) plays Sicdeborg (Dunedin), tho present champion.
