PETONE BOROUGH

The Petone Borough Council mot last night, tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Eivnn) presiding. There were also present Councillors C. P. Brockolbnnk, W. Hay, J. Churchouse, A. Anderson. G. Cook, E. Tovey, and D. S. Bedingfield. Tho Minister of Labour wroto acknowledging the receipt of the council's re. solution suggesting that the Saturday half-holiday ho made compulsory throu'u'liout the Dominion. In reply, ho pointed out that under the exisLing law the half-holiday was fixed cither l)y tho local authorily or by n poll of the electors in cacli district. If, however, a genwal desire ihroughout the Dominion were expressed for the legislation, the question would lie carefully considered by the Government—Received. A communication was received from the secretary, St. Augustine's Hockey Club, drawing attention to the bad state of No. 3 ground owing to tho surfaeo water thereon, and asking that the council consider, the question of providing for next season drier ground adjacent to No. 1 ground on the higher level. The Petone League Football Club also wrote drawing svltentjon to tho state of No. 2 ground after rninfnll. Tho engineer (Mr. A. Cr.vio) reported that building permits issued for tho month totalled ,£5226,' and the fees accruing to the council ,£IG ss.
