LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS

MEETING OP BOROUGH COUNCIL. . The Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworth) proBided over the meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night when there were also present-. Councillors A. J. Hobbs, A. J. West, W. Mitchell, W. R. Hardy, A. Mncaskill, W. Meldrum. W. Knight, and W. T. Cotton. A letter was received from a ratepayer complaining of a chargo of 10s. for tho supervision of a gas connection.—On the motion of Councillor Mitchell, seconded by Councilor Meldrum, it was decided to insist on the payment of the account's the charge was considered legitimate and reasonable. P. G. Head was refused permission to keep his billiard-room open till 11 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. The manager of the Bank of New 'tea land advised that as from July 15 tho rate of interest on overdraft would be 6 per cent, instead of 5J per cent., at> ■heretofore. _ ■ The president and secretary of th* Hutt C£ub advised that the "club had decided to abandon its charter. . A letter was received from the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. W. M*Ewnn) slating that the Hutt Council's invitation to meet the Petono Council in conference with reference to tho proposal for joint ownership of the gasworks had been given full coniideration by his council, and that no action had been (nken in the matter.—The letter was received. Pursuant to notice, Councillor Cotton moved: "That the council take into consideration the question of appointing to its staff a motor mechanic who would 1» capable of looking after and driving the motor ambulance and fire brigade motor vehicle, and ask tho borough engineer whether it would not be possible to find employment for such mechanic in other municipal work when not engaged on the motor vehicles, and dispense with the services of any present employee so that the extra cost bo. made os low as possible."—Tho engineer suggested that he be given time to look into the matter. 11. was decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting, when the engineer's report would be available.
