It was only by the restoration of sueli trade that Britain could hope to resume •her position in the world. While he did not uhder-estimate the part America nnd Japan had played in the war, he said that those countries had. been able to secure markets which once were the monopoly of Britain. However, 'since the armistice the progress made by Bri■tish industry 'was such that they might •'- be proud of.' Inthe first five months of this year our exports were within-20 per cent, of the value of the exports "in 1913, and the percentage to 'Europe expanded from 33 to 48,. but there had been a reduction in the exports to the countries outside Europe. They.'looked' with' : hope towards :the Empire markets! He urged exporters to 'use -their Resources to satisfy the Imperial markets.
