it the next meeting of tho Carterton Borough Council a deputation from tho Carterton Public Library will attend and endeavour to enlist their support financially. For several years past tho library has had a struggling existence, and unless some means, either by a substantial giant or tho levying of a library late, is provided, indications point to tho institution having to closo down. Ever since tho Into war tho books and papers required ■ for tho library and reading-room have advanced from 50 lo 100 per cont., while the revenue has diminished, the chief loss being the Government subsidy, which amounted to .£3O. The reading-room Ims felt the pinch also, for many journals have ceased their freo list. The subscription of 10s. per annum is considered altogether too small, but beforo any increase r.oiild reasonably bo asked, tho committee feel -that they must bo in a ixisilion to assure . a regular supply of new books. Tho Wellington Labour Representation Committee will hold a demonstration in the Paramount Theatre on Sunday evening, when a report on tho proceedings of tho conference will bo given.
