POWER-HOUSE AT EVANS BAY
PROSPECT NOT WELCOMED BY LOCAL RESIDENTS.
Evans Bay residents forwarded to last night's meeting of the City Council a protest against the erection of a power station at the bay. The Power Stations Committee mad© the following recommendation :-"That the residents m question bo informed that the council cannot see its way to depart from its decision in the matter." Councillor Shorhmd thought it was incorrect to imply that the council had reached a final decision to establish a power-house at Evans Buy. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) reminded Councillor Shorland that the question of site had actually been settled on a vote of the council. Out of deference, ihowever, to tho opinion of seven councillors, who favoured the obtaining of an independent report, no action had been taken in pursuance of the decision, and Mr. L. Birks (Chief Electrical Engineer for the Government) had been asked to furnish a report. In tho meantime, tlia council had entered into no commitments whatever in regard Jo the chosen,«ito. It was not oven embarrassed with tna nurchaso of tho Innd. Tho recommendation of the committed was adopted.
