NEW LUCERNE PEST
A message from West Maitland to the Sydney "Daily Telegraph" says tho lucerne growing industry is threatened by a now pest, whioh has made its appearance at Louth Park, near Maitland, and has already wrought considerable damage. The pest is in the form of a small brown grub, about an inoh in ilenrth, which bores down into tho stem and root.of the plant, just under tho surface, so thoroughly riddiingi it that the plant dies off. In one fiold at Louth. Park, on tho property of Mr. GeGrge Grant, a well-known district farmer, where o. patch of only about a yard square was affected in the early summer months, the owner' is now ploughing up six acres that have been rendered unprofitable commercially on account of the depredation of tho grub. Thousands in the chrysalis stago are being turned up by the plough, and hundreds of starlings are being provided with a rare feast. • Mr. regards the pest as the worst that has ever threatened the lucerne - crop. Whether it will thrive in moist seasons remains to be seen.
