OFFER OF NEW SOUTH WALES COAL OWNERS REJECTED • ROYAL COMMISSION ASKED FOR (By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright Sydney, July 1. All tho coal mines in the Northern, Western, and Southern districts of New South Wales were idle on Wednesday while the men discussed the owners' reply to the union's demands. The miners decided to reject the owners' offer—the appointment of a tribunal by Mr. W. M. Ilughes, and in the meanwhile a minimum rate of lis. 6d. The meetings asked for a lloynii Commission to inquire comprehensively into the coal and coke industry, including freights, profits, prices, hours, and conditions of work, and wages. The proprietors complain that they lire unab.o jto accept orders for large quantities of coal owing to intermittent an<l irritating stoppages. The union argues that at 13s. Gu. a day workers have averaged £2 lis. a weelt, based on tho time worked. Mr. Willis, miners' secretary, speaking at BuKi, said that nothing short of socialisation .wuld solve tho question. —Press Assn.
