Mr. C, E. Chittey, cashier to'the Treamiry,.has retired cn superannuation after 42 years' service. Mr. Chittey joined the service as a cadet, and has ever since been associated with the -Treasury. For the post twenty-eight years he lias filled the responsible position of cashier. Mr, Chittey wns the-oldest Public Servant in tho IVpartnient, and served under six Pay-masters-General. Mr. Chittey's intention had Iwbii to retire at the end of forty years' service, but owing to the war demanding tho services of senior officers, he agreed to continue in office until things begin to settle down.
' Mr. F. W. Good, the-Mains Superintendent of the Electric Lighting, Department of the Wellington City Council, who has been given twelve months' leave of absence on account of ill-health, was prior to leaving met by the employees of the-overhead mains, who wishrd him au revoir. Mr. George Lauchlan. Electrical Engineer, in presenting Mr. Good with some useful gifts, snoke of the long and valued service tvhich 1m had given ■to the city, and conveyed to him the best wishes of his fellow-workers, and the hope that the tw.elve months' spell would restore him to his' usual health and vigour.
Mr. Keith Murdoch, who visited Wellington with H.Ii.H. the Prince of Wales, left Aucklnnd for Vancouver, en route, to London, on Wednesday. Mr. H. Brice. who has 'been in Bowen Street Private Hospital for tho past nine weeks, has sufficiently recovered. to bo nble to return to his home in Brandon Street. x

On Wednesday evening atjie Terrace Prison n presentation was made'to Mr. G. Crook, Governor of AVellington Prisons, who is retiring after 39 years' activo service. The presentation took the form of h ' leather siiit' case and travelling rug for Mr. Crook and a handbag and a silver and oak frame for Mrs. Crook. The chief warder, Mr. H. Foreman, spoke of tho respect, in which Mr. Crook had always been' held, and the exceptional popularity which he had always, enjoyed in every prison he had worked in. Mr. E. Arnold, Visiting Justice, when making tho presentations, referred to the fact that he had been a Visiting JU6tice for , wore than 20 years, and had seen many changes. None. he deplored more than this, as Mr. Crook had proved himself loyal, faithful, nnd conscientious, and always when dealing with the inmates tried to temper justice with mercy. Dr. Gilmer, Prison Surgeon, thanked Mr, Crook -for his support at all times, and wished Mr. and Mrs. Crook long- years,of happiness to enjoy a well-earned rest." Mr. D, Mackintosh represented the Controller-General and Prisons Department, and made reference to Mr. Crook's long- and fnithful service. His retirement was' Tfgretted by all the officers of the prison serviec throughout ■ the Dominion. Tho Matron also tbhnkod Mr. Crook for his holp and unfailing patience and courtesy. Apologies for un-. avoidable absence were received from the Controller-General of Prisons, and Mr Henry Hume, V.J., ,"lso from officers who were absent cn nccouut of sickness and .other causes. Mr. Crook thanked tlihse\ as-semblrd for the handsome gifts presented to Mrs. Crook and himself, and for the good .wishes expressed.
Mr. Robert IT.' Watson, for twenty rears chief engineer at tho Islington Freezing Works. Canterbury, dropped down dead in his office at the works, yesterday. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter.—Press As?,n.

Mr. T. Harle Giles, Conciliation Commissioner at Auckland, has returned from a visit to the South. His health is much improved, and ho hopes to be able to resume his duties in September.

Ciilleu, at the Auckland city police barracks, on Tuesday evening by l .Inspector Johnson, on behalf of both branches, of' the service, Short • speeches, eulogistic of Mr. Culien's services as a member of the Polico Force, were given by several officers,- who extended their best wishes for his success in the business ho had entered.
