Mellish appeared) pleaded euilty' to theft of three tins of sardines, valuo 3a.,, the property. of the Union Steam.Ship The accused was engaged in working the Moana on Monday, and at 10 p.m. he was noticed-by .Detective Tricklcbank to hava something bulky about him. On being Bearched the tins of sardines were found ; hidden under his shirt. He was fined £10. ■ in default one month's imprisonment. A young; man. named Henrtf William Knot (for, whom Mr. 0. B. O'Donnell ap peared) pleaded guilty i to a charge of receiving in January,• 1918, various sums amounting to £10 10s. 4d.'on terms requiring him to account for the.same to tile City Milk Supply. Ltd.. and fraudu-. lently omitt'ng to do So. The case'came before the Court in -July. 1918. when' accused, was. ordered to refund the' amount by monthly instalments. He'paid a part of the amount and foas . still .owing £5 10s. He was lined £2. and'ordered to pay the balance by monthlv. instalments of £1. . "Thomaß. Eiddell, S.M., delivered ro served judgment in respect of the claim made by the liquidator of tjij M'Arthur' Milliken Structural Engineering Co., Ltd. (in liquidation) - against A'. Bonner,- to recover £50, for two 'calls of ss. each lipon 100-shares held b" the defendant in the company. •. A technical defence i wa* ' raised; the grounds of ■ which were that tho appoiritmont of the liquidator was 'invalid, and that both, the directors' and the liquidators' calls were invalid. His Worship held thaF the appointment ofthe liquidator was in order, but agreed ■ that the calls made were'invalid and that the'plaintiff could not succeed in tho claim against ; tho defendant until they were put in order. Plaintiff was accordingly nonsuited.. E., 0.. Chllcott, tailor, claimed from P. A. Hadley (Auokland) £25 Is. 6d. for tailoring work done The defendant had adraitted n part of his liability, but objeoted to pay for a 6uft and extra pair or trousers on the eround that they wero unsatisfactory. CASES. . For failing to have sufficient liehts on their motov-"ars Eric Jenkins was fined £1. and' William Webb. 105.,' each . defendant to pay 7s. costs. • Before Messrs. J. W. M'Ewan and J. H. Burn, J.P.'s, at a short sitting of the Petone Polico' Court, William M'Elwain. who -had been convicted on five occasions during the past six months, was sentenced tp ond month's imprisonment for insobriety. On a of discharging offensive matter in a public place he was convicted and discharged.
