Glorious weather prevailed at Hastings for tho opening of the Winter Meeting, and the going was splendid. There was a large attendance of the miotic. Ilio big steeplechase was a splendid race, the .jumping being of a high order. The totalisator handled £28,651, as against £21,595 last> year.

In the Hack Steeplechase. GraftcUa was favourite. Slumix and To Toa led for a mile and a half, when Jhc pair fell, and Jacaranda and tho favourite wore left in front. The first-named fell at tho sod wall, and .Tohu Bunnv and Notability .loincd Graftflla, and the former, coming away, won bv two lengths from Notability. Sandriiiffham was a fair third, mid then came Nlcomar and GraftcUa.

AH the acceptors started in tho fleck Hurdles, Ladorair beine a firm favHiitc. Ho juinnod well, and at no stase of the race did he look like setting oeaton. Strongeways was in front for eicht furlones. but the favourite then took rlia.up. and though itannish chaUenned him ooiring up the home bend, the top v.eieht won comfortably bv a lencth. In the Hawke's Bav Hurdles, the withdrawal of Mill o' Gowrie left many everidght backers lamentine. Deviation waß in front at the last fence, Thrace came fast, but he could not >ench Deviation, who won by a neck. Maraetotara was a head away, and then-came Paddington Gre_en and Goldstrcam.

The nublic was well on the mark in the Hunters Hurdles, for both Kopeur and Signysian wero sorted out as tho best, and thev filled the -laces. Signyslan took charge after going half a mile, and though Kopeur challenged him troing down tho back, the too wcteht was always ,going the best, and won easily from Kopeur, v,''"i had to be ridden out to boat Tornea.

Elevate was tho only withdrawal from the Winter Hack Handicap, leaving a field of 19. Ohiti, with Gray in the saddle, was a good favourite. Walton being next choice. At tho start Sea Foam led, but Ncgambo took up the running down the back with Sea Foam, Sir Fanciful, and Utuwai next. Negambo was still in charge at tho distance, but then several others put in claims. In a great finish Sir Fanciful won by a neck from Negambo, with Persian Prince a head away, and in a lino came Sea Foam, Utuwai. Achilleon, Walton, and Ben Bolt.

Ruddy and Hindi wore missing when, the field paraded for the Horetaunga Handicap. It was a good betting race, Comedy Prince, Income, and Parisian ; Diamond all carrying a lot of support. At the start Hyginas and Hymarty Bhowed out.from Crocsnß, Parisian Diamond, and a bunch; cd field. The last-named got badly Btoppei on the home turn, and lost a. lot of ground. Hymarty we* first into the straight, hut at the distance Gold Kin took choree, and he ran in a comfortable winner from Bagdad, who came from a lone way back, and Hyfrinas.
