- BEETLES EEMAIN IN NEW I • ■ ZEALAND. The disposal of the Broun collection of New Zealand beetles \va6 mentioned >at the meeting of the Board of Science and Art yesterday. The Government recently prohibited the export from Neff Zealand of this collection, which was bequeathed by the late Major Broun to the British Museum* and the action has given rise to much discussion. •' Tho Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. Q.J. Andorson) eaid that he thought tho Government had done the Tight tiling in, preventing the export of the collection, which was of vcrv great importance to New- Zealand. The collection should not be allowed to go until a duplicate was available., Mr. H. F. von Hast agreed with the Minister,' but suggested that some financial consideration should be extended to the people who were to have ■benefited by tho sate-of'.a part of the collection in Britain. The Minister read a letter received from tho Director of the British Museum, consenting to the collection remaining in Now Zealand for two years in order that duplicate snecimens might be named. Tho Director suggested as an alternative that the collection should be sent to London at once with tho Dominion Museum collection, which would be returned after it had been nnmed.

The board approved of tlie retention of tho collection in Now Zealand. Tho Minister stated in the course of further discussion that tho preparation of a duplicate collection might pot ho possible in two years, but ho did not doubt that na extension of timo could bo arranged. It was stated that tho buiMing up of a duplicate collection would require the, services of expert.', and that tho Dominion Museum was the only museum ■ in New Zealand that had such experts on its staff.
