ARCHBISHOP MANNIX AND NATIONAL ANTHEMS
THE INCIDENT ON THE VENTURA. (Rec. June 17, 9.5 p.m.) New York, June 17. The "New Ybrk World" has received a telegram from Mr. Marcellus Parsons stating: '.'On the Ventura leaving Honolulu a band on the deck played 'God Save tho King' and 'America.' The passengers" stood at attention with botfed heads, but Archbishop Mannix remained seated. The band then played 'The Star-Spangled : Banner.' Tho passengers stood at attention, but Dr. Mannix remained seated. I then approaohed Dr. Mannix' and asked him whether he realised that the band wag playing 1 the American Anthem. Dr. Mannix replied in the affirmative. I then said, 'Why don't yon rise?' He replied that he did not care to. A number of passengers held a- meeting and sent a radiogram to Mr. Colby on June 8 signed by elevon Americans."—Aus.-N".Z. Cable Assn. TA message .published yesterday stated that at San Francisco Arohbishop Mannix said he. .believed the "Star-Spangled Banner" women English anthem, beoauso lie thought ho heard Englishmen singing it; and he therefore declined to stand.]
