HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
. A meeting of tho Hutt County Council Was held yesterday, Councillor M. W. Whelch presiding. ' There were also present Councillors \V, J. Howell, J. Whiteman, J. Barclay and P. Cavanagh. Tho inspector's report 6tatcd that the main road east of' Silveretream was being patched up. Portions of this road were 'in a very rought state, and in fact most of the main Toads in all ridings had some very rough portions. The Horoklwi Valloy road and the Moonshine Hill road aro being repaired and considerably improved. A 42in. concrete culvert has been put in at Kaitoke, the old bridge removed, and the hollow filled in. A Btart has been made with road work on tho Ngararu and Muapoko blocking, on No. 1 Soldiers' Sottlement at . Paraparaumu. Tho work has been held up by the bad weather, but all the same good progress has been made. It was decided to endorse the following roeolution passed by the Bay of Islands County Council: "That the Prime Minister be urged by this council to have introduced during the coming session legislation either (a) giving local bodies full power to enforce the payment of rates by Maoris, or (b) providing for payment of Native rates by the general Government. It was also decided to endorse n resolution forwarded by tho Pahiatua County Council, urging that "the Housing Act, 1919, be amended so that it makes, provision for the purchase of land to erect dwellings or of buildings already erected." Accounts to the amount of £1165 lis. 2d. were passed for payment.
