"END OF THE WAVE"
BIG DECREASE IN INFLUENZA CASES QUIESCENT PERIOD PREDICTED "I regard the position as very satisfactory. Apparently wo have readied tlio end o£ the wave," remarked tlio District Health Officer (Dr. I. E. Faris) to a Dominion reporter yesterday, in reviewing tlio influenza statistics for "Wellington district. Dr. Paris added that uc k'oked as if the district was going to havo a quiescent period now, although the possibility of further mild waves of influenza during the winter should not lie overlooked. For the week ended noon yesterday only 209 cases were notified, • a decroaso of ,155 eases compared with the figures for the previous week, and a decrcasu ol 880 cases oil the total recorded two weeks ago. Nelson, with an increase of i four eases, was the only district in which a falling-off was nqt .disclosed. Of the latest notifications fifteen wero listed as pneumonic—the previous week there were twenty-one cases in this category—and one as severe. In' Wellington citv last week 'there wero Gfi mild cases, rind 6 pneumonic cases reported', and at Petone 10 mi'.d and one severe case. Ten eases of pneumonia were notified last week from the following centres:—"Wellington, 4; Stratford, 1; Palmerston North, 2; Dannevirke, 1; Marton, 1; Wairau. 1. Influenza notifications last week were received from the following liospital districts within the Wellington area:—Waipawa, 11; Taranaki, 20; Stratford, 26; Hawera. 25; I > atea, 13; "Wanganui, 35; •Wellington, 83; Palmerston Nortn, 36; Wnirarapa, 23; Nelson, 7. The pneumonic cases were distributed as follow:— Taranaki. 1; Stratford, 1; "Wanganui, 7; Wellington, G. Infectious Diseases. Infectious diseases reported last week totalled 313, compared with 683 for tlio previous week. The cases were distributed; as follow;—'Waipawa: Scarlet fover, 2; diphtheria, 4; tuberculosis, 1; influenza pneumonia, 1; measles, 1; erysipelas, 1. Taranaki; Scarlet fever, 2; influenza, 20; varicella, 2. ■ Straifcford: Diphtheria, 1; influenza. 2G; pneumonia, 1: varicella, 2. Hawera: Diphtheria, 2; influenza. 25; varicella, 1. Patea: Influenza, 13. "Wanganui: Diphtheria, i; tuberculosis. 1; influenza, 35; pneumonia, 1; opthalniia, 1; 1. Palmerston North: Diphtheria, G; influenza, 36; pneumonia, 2; measles, 1; opthalmia neonatorium, 1; varicella, 4; hydatids, 1. Wellington: Diphtheria, 8'; enteric fever, 1; tuberculosis; 2; influenza, 83; pneumonia, 4: erysipelas, 2. Wairarapa: Scarlet fever, 4; diphtheria, 1; tuberculosis. 1; influenza, 23.
