PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

The ■astronomical section of the Wellinston Philosophical Society .held its monthly meeting lust evening. Thevo wns a good attendance, Dr. C. 12. Adams presiding. Dr. Adams rend an interesting paper on (ho'Samoan observatory, which he visited recently with Professor Marsden. The observatory mostly worked in iiingnetic' and aeismological work, and the. observations were of tho very highest standard. Tho obscr. vatorv was established five or six years ago by the University of Gottingen, and Dr. Angenheister was the director during Dr. Adams'* visit. The address was illustrated by lantern slides. Mr. A. C. Gift'ord, 11.A., read a paper on "The Initial Padiation from a Nova" and "The High Velocities of tho l'.lanetaiv Nebulae." Professor Marsden also spoke 011 the Samoau observatory.
