OBITUARY

MES. M. A. WILLIAMS, AGED 91,

In the death of Mrs. M. A. Williaivs. which took place early last evening. at hoi residence on the Terrace, Wellington loses one of its best-known and lucst respected citizen?. It was on luesday that her 9*st birthday had ucen celebrated, and she had been the recipient of innumerable good wishes alia telegrams from a very wide circle of friends. Although she had been ailing for some, considerable time it. was only within tho past fortnight or three weeks that her strength seriously began to give way. though her faculties remained wonderfully bright and clear. There are certain of Mrs. Williams's benefactions which are well known to the public of -this city. She was the founder of the Sailors' Institnte, and she donated the land and building now known as the Sailors' Friend Society Institute as a memorial to her late husband. Captain W. P. Williams. The Y.M.C.A., the Salvation Armv, and many other institutions benefited by her liberality. Her privsit' b-nefaetions, however, were innumerable. 'Mid of these only the recipients can speak, for Airs. Williams was one of those whose right hand was not allowed to know what her left* was doing. For herself, she rigidly denied all luxuries, but what she denied to herself she gave, to others. The deceased lady was a native of Dorset, England, and arrived in the Dominion between 50 and GO years ago. She had witnessed the growth of Wellington from n very Kinall beginning, and she retained lively recollections the early citizens and the early days. Mrs. Williams is survived by three grand-daughters and one grandson, the family of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. J. 11. Williams, and lier only son, the late Mr. ,T. 11. Williams. She__was a great supporter of tho Conchurches, and was tho eldest member of tho Terrace Congregational Church, and ono of the eldest in membership.
