In consequence of tho continually increasing cost ef manufacture, the Masterton Borough Council decided last night to increase tho gross price of gas to 10s. per thousand feet, discount to be allowed at, the rate of 3s. _4d. per thousand feet far power producing and combined cooking and lighting, and 2s. Id. per thousand feet for lighting alone. This makes the net prices ns follow.— Power, Gs. Bd.; combined cooking and lighting; 6s. Bd.; lishting, 7s. lid. A letter was read from the Tnluatua Council at last night's meeting of the Mastertoit Borough Council pointing out that tho Housing Act, us it concerns loans to local bodies, was unsatisfactory, in (hat loans could not be U9cd in tho purchase of existing buildings. It was pointed out bv several councillors that the clause had been inserted in the Act as an incentive to tho provision of new dwellings. The acquiring of existing dwellings acted as a deterrent to the building of houses and created much hardship. The council decided against any proposal to alter the Act in this direction. At tho Fcatherston Magistrate's Court the Labour Department claimed from Miss Mona Burt tho < sum of £2 ns ft pennltv for a breach of tho Wellington Shop Tniloresses' award. Tt was stated in evidence that the defendant commenced her apprenticeship with A. C. Drew, tailor. Featherston, on February 2. 1918. and left her employment on February 22, 1920, thereby failing to complete her full apprenticeship of thrco years.
