FOSTERING CLOSER RELATIONS WITH CANADA. Ottawa, May 31. In welcoming the West Indian delegates to tho conference to foster closer trade relations with Canada, Iho Duke of Devonshire (Governor-General) pointed out that the real question at issue was that of making the futwe- of the Empire secure. If the Empire was selfsunporting security was .unquestionable. Colonel L. C. Airier}', representing the Colonial Office, emphasised the Imperial aspect of tho conference, and said ho hoped the outcome would bo a widening of tho existing trado preference between the Dominion and tho West Indies. The Hon. E. St. John Branch, Attor-ney-General for Jamaica, said that the colony was prepared to entor whole-heart-edly into any great scheme for tlie consolidation of" tho Empire. Representatives from all tho West Indies were present—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
