MILK SHORTAGE
25 PER CENT. ON MONDAY.
The drear days of winter are upon us, and with them conies tho milk supply problem for the city. On Monday last thoro was a shortage of supply representing 25 per cent. Yesterday tho shortage was about 22 per cent.—quite sufficient, oir'top of Monday's sliortnge, to 1)0 severely felt in some quarters. Yesterday (Juno 1) (hero was a rise in tho price of mill; to flio farmers of {(1. a gallon, making their return Is. lid. per gallon in Wellington. An .inquiry was made as to whether the supply of milk available tor tho city was exhausted. A Dojitniox reporter was informed that there was plenty of milk to be had at Featherston—at a price! Asked what the Ft?atherston farmers wanted," the reply was that they were asking Is. Gd. a callon at the factory door. It cost 3d. a gallon to bring tho milk into Wellington, so that the Featherston farmers' price would be Is. fld. per gallon in Wellington as against the Is. sd. a gallon tho west const farmers were satisfied with. That was tho real reason why the Milk Committee had withheld drawing on Featherston- for supplies—the • difference in price was too great.
