General Sir William Birdwood, who as one of tho foremost military leaders at Gallipoli was>held in such marked esteem and affection by all ranks, will arrive hero from.Sydney this evening General Birdwood will ba tendered «. civic reception to-morrow evening. Colonel Hunter, who had charge of the Dental Services of tho New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has been appointed director of the Dental Department being established for giving free dental examination and treatment to school children. The appointment of Colonel Hunter was first mado somo time ago, but as complaints were mado by other members of ihe profession about tho position being given to him without competition being invited, he resigned. Ho had now been reappointed. Councillor C. H. Chapman has since Friday last been suffering from a mild attack of influenza. On behalf of the residonts of Palmorston North, Mr. W. G. Riddel!, S.M., yesterday afternoon presented Mr. John P. Manning, tho Magistrate's Court Bailiff, with an illuminated address, suitably framed. Tho address bears tho slgnaluro of Mr. ■T. A. Nash, M.P., tho Mayor of the borough, and others. Mr. Manning was for about years connected with the Court at Piilmerston North, and was transferred to Wellington, when Kv. Alabaster became custodian of tlio Supremo Court a few months ago. Tho death of Mr. Melhulsh, financial editor of the "Argus," is announced by a Press Association message from Melbourne.
