DAIRYMAN HEAVILY FINED

• John Telford, who through his solicitor (Mr. .T. M. Dale) pleaded guilty on Friday to having slaughtered a calf for human consumption in other than a registered abattoir, and selling, the carcass of a calf weighing less than 601b. for human consumption, appeared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning before Mr. E. Page S.M.. to give evidence. Telford, who is a dairy former at South, said that the calf that he killed was over a week old. Ho killed it for the skin, but as it was a particularly fine calf he decided as an afterthought to take the corcaßs to the pork butcher, from whom he received 7s. Mr. T. 0. Webb, Inspector of the Agricultural Department, remarked that a watch had been kept for pome considerable time-to detect such broaches of tho regulations. In answer to a question, Telford sala that it was the first time he had sold a calf to a butcher since he had been at Karori. Other witnesses were called to provo that the calf was some days old when it was slaughtered, and that it was healthy. Mr. Dale contended that one of tho charges should bo withdrawn, because to impose fines for both.would be to punish defendant twice over, The inspector sr-ld thct far from tho calf being fit for human coi'smmption, it was a disgusting sight when ho ai d another Inspector saw it in the butcher's shop, and It was therefore comiemncrt. • Tho Magistrate remarked that though Telford had been quite definite in hi; statement that he had sold no other calves from his Karori farm, Iju was not so clear as to having done so previously. It seemed strange that he should take it into, his head to sell the carcass to tho particular butcher. On the first charge Telford was fined £20, and on the second £10.
