TECHNICAL EDUCATION

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. Messrs. G. Frost (chairman), W. H. Bennett, J. J. Shand, C. A. Lawrence, and L. R. Partridgo were present at the monthly meeting of the Wellington Technical Education Board last evening. The following letter was received from the Repatriation Board: "We aro in receipt of your letter Tegardiug the training of discharged soldiers at your college, and the matter was duly brought up for discussion at a recent meeting of the District Board. It has been 'the praotiee of tho Department to always favour tuition at your college in preference to institutions, but on certain' subjects, accountancy in particular, the tuition given at the night cli.sses of your college is not sufficiently advanced for many of the discharged soldiers who apply to us for assistance with their fees. We are quite aware, of course, of the special classes for returned soldiers under Mr. E. lv. Cameron, but as these are held in the daytime this would mean, that the Depart* nient would have .to- pay training sustenance to all men attending, theso classes, and this is only done in cases where the soldior is badly disabled and not able to take on heavy employment. We note your remarks re architectural classes, and in future applications fdJ this form of study wo will most certainly induce them to study at your college jn preference to any private institution."

A letter was received from the Decorations Committee bearing testimony to tho excellent work done by Mr, J. Ellis and the students.of the college in connection with the decorations for the Prince's visit to Wellington.—The chairman emphasised the {food work which had been done by Mr. Ellis, and on his motion a resolution •ondjjtsing the view of the committee was placed «n record.

An assortment of tools from tho carpentering and engineering classes of the Y.M.C.A. was oflercd {or sale to tho board.—On the recommendation of Mr. J. H. Howell, it was resolved to purchaso material to the amount of £H.

Miss L. Smith was appointed mistress to supervise tho girls attending tho collego during lunch hour.

Mr. Howell reported that Mis 9 Williams, instructress of shorthand, had applied for an increase in salary of ,£2O per annum.—The matter was left in the hands of the director to deal with.

Blue prints of tho completed plans of the new college wero laid on the table for inspection. The Standing Committee reported that it had appointed Mr. Alexander Barclay 'on the recommendation of Hie Plumbers' Board of Control) to the position of chief instructor in plumbing, and Miss Simpson, of the Southland Technical College, Invoroareill, to the position of commercial mistress. The' committee had received a report on the architectural classes from tho instructor and the director, and recommended that the classes be continued next term, as at present; but that unless considerable improvement was shown, the classes bo suspended until the new buildings wero available. In- view of the valuable services rendered by Mr. Robinson to the plumbing classes on the resignation of Mr. Johnston, it was recommended that tho formed be granted a'bonus of £5. A request had been received from Miss Wolferstan l'or an'increase in her remuneration, to enable her to continue- in her present position, and the committee recommended that an increaso of 255. per month be granted until the end of her engagement.—The report was adopted.
