The financial strain consequent to the upkeep and maintenance of 300 orphans housed in St. Joseph's Orphanage., Upper Hutt, and managed by the Sisters of Mercy, has-necessitated an appeal being made to the public for assistance. His Worship the Mayor has Riven the Sisters permission to have a 6treet collection next Friday for this purpose, and a number of ladies have volunteered to carry out this work. The cost of living, both in food and clothing, is' keenly felt at the orphanage, which has thrown open its doors to the children of soldiers killed or maimed in tlio Great War, and also to the children of the influenza victims. Littlo or nothing is contributed for the support of these children, the Sisters kaviwr to rely on tho generosity of the publio to aid them in their self-sacrificing work.

The wedding took place in the Elthani Church recently of Miss May Stanners, Elthnm, to Captain C. J. Pierce,' N.Z.E.F., of Cambridge, and son of Mr. J. Pierce, Stratford, Miss Ruby Pierce was bridesmaid, and Captain G. E. Jngo was best man. The art circle of tho Auckland Women's Club had the pleasure of listening- to a lecture given' last week on "Women Artists," by Mr. A. S. Boyd, formerly of the' staff of the London "Graphic," and contributor to "Punch.' , Girls' Club. The weekly meeting of the W.N.R. Girls' Club was held at tho residence of Miss Pittard (president of : tho. club), when. Nurse Butter gave an interesting talk •on maternity nursing. Many "emergoncy" questions were asked and answered, and a 'hearty vote of thanks passed to Nurse Butler for the instructive'address. The remainder of the evening -was taken- -up with a conipet'i-' tion (won ?by Miss M'Cluggage), after which refreshments were 6'erved. Mrs, Walter Nathan and Miss Zaidee Nathan have returned from a visit to England. - Miss Eva Western (Picton) is spending a few days in Wellington on her way through to Auckland, where she will connect with a steamer for Honolulu. Mrs. J. Archer (Masterton) is visiting Nelson. Mrs. M. Dorothy Finch left last week by .tho. Ulimaroa to visit friends in Australia.
