The late Mr. T. S. Culling, who died at his residence, Remuera, on Wednesday, was a native of Lyttelton, where h.i was born in 1853: Tor many years he resided at Dunedin, and for four years lie was Mayor of the borough of St:. Kilda. Mr. Culling had been a resident of Auckland for tho past twelve vears. He had been connected with tho paper milling trade for many years and was a director of the New Zealand Paper Mills.
Mr. F. J. Eolleston has been elected chaiman of the Timaru Harbour Board for the ninth consecutive term.
Mr. William Brown, whoso death at the age of 81, occurred last Wednesday from the combined offect of pneumonia an<l shock through being knocked down by a tramcar, was for many years ono of Wellington's strongest chess players. In his younger days he was a prominent member of the Bath Chess Club. Ho joined the Wellington Club in 1883 and played his last game in the club's rooms only three weeks ago. Ho was also an enthusiastic member of the Working Men's Club, and acted as lion, secretary to the chess and draughts section for a tern). He scored many successes in local tourneys and matches, and also when representing Wellington in telegraphic contests against other centres. I? 0 also took part in several New Zealand congresses, his best bid for the Dominion championship being made at Dunedin in the 18934 tournoy, when ho tied witii two champions, Messrs. Barnes and R. A. Cleland. for second place. He was tho sole survivor of thoso who took part in the second New Zealand Congress (1888-9), Messrs. Hookham, Qllivier, Bvnbow, Mount, and T. Sexton having predeceased him. Though not a prize-winner on that occasion no had the satisfaction of defeating the then champion (Mr. HookhamJ) in the final round.' He "slackened off" after reaching the "threo score and ten," but could play a very forceful game right up to tho end of his days.
The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital of Mr. I. Last, of Kumeroa, from pneumonic influenza. The deceased, who had been in bad health for some> time, leaves a young widow a-id one child.
Mi. C. C. W. Hflsolden has been appointed manager of the Tolaga Bay branch of the Bank of New South Wales. It is ptated on good authority (says the "Lyttelton Times") that Mr. Richard Evans, of Kaiapoi, is to receive a cult to the Legislative Couuoil in. recognition of his long and valuable publie services.
Aftor being several weeks in the Bowcn Street private hospital, Mr. R. C. Rcnner, who suffered 6cvoro injuries in a bicycle accident, returned to his home on Saturday. Though mending slowly, ho is still in a very weak condition.
Mr. Edward Quintan, a familiar figure on tho Queen's Wharf for a quarter of n century past as tho Harbour Board's signalman at tho watch-tower, and as-sistant-bei thing master, has retired from the lwurd's servico on superannuation. On Saturday ho met the staiF of tho Chief Wharfinger (Captain A. V. H. Monro), and was presented with a Morri.i chair and a china tea-set, In making tho presentation, Captain Monro referred to the very many excellent qualities possessed by Mr. Quintan, who hid occupied tho position of signalman since 1888. Captain Monro said that his association with Mr. Quintan had been a particularly happy one, and ho felt sure th.it all 'would join with him in expressing th# liopo that Mr. Quintan would enjoy his well-earned Test.
