MINING FOR METALS

REPORT ON POSSIBILITIES IN' UNITED KINGDOM SAFEGUARDING THE WORKERS By Telegraph—Presa Association-Copyright London, May 2G. The roport of the committee set up to report on cho possibilities of mining for metals other than iron in the United Kingdom, recommends tho centralisation an one organisation of the Departmental duties relating to non-ferrous mining and urges that tho organisation should immediately undertake tho geological and statistical work. It also recommcnds tho adoption of the 1911 commission's proposals relative'to tho health and safety of workers in mines, and the compul=ory deposit with tho Department of Mines of tho surface and-underground plans of all mines on the lines of the South African practice.' The committee further suggests-that the organisation should undertake certain functions which the Dominions regard as falling, within tho BCot» of the Government, although never so regarded in the United Kingdom.•For instance, it should advise regarding the development and improvement of existing methods. An important recommendation is that the Government should take powers analogous to those of the Dominions' to extend , financial assistance to. mines to enable them to . surmount difficulties, and undcrtako approved exploration development.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Reuter.
