GENERAL SIR W. BIRDWOOD
RECEPTION PROBABLY ON THURSDAY.
Originally tjeneral Sir W. Bird wood was to liave arrived here from Sydney on Monday, and arrangements had been •made to tender him a civic reception on Tuesday evening-next. Now he. is not at; riving 'until Wednesday, and the Mayor (Mr .T P. Luke) has cabled the general the'city's desire to tender hint a reception on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. To that end the Mayor has invited tho presence of the Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. P. Massey). the Leader of tlifl Opposition (Mr. W. D. S. Mac Donald), and representatives _of the Keturned Soldiers' Association. Speaking to 0, Dominion reporter yesterday, Mr. W. Perry, president of the Wellington branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, said that at otto time it was contemplated giving General Birdwood a "dialers'" reception, but owing to the brevity of his stay in Wellington the association had thrown in j.s lot with the civic authorities, and the Mayor 'nan lieen good euougli to allocate the ground floor of the Town Hall to returned soldiers. Will they. be. able to fill it? "Will they—with Binlwood? \ou wait and see!" was Mr. Perry's reply.
