BRONZE PLAQUE AND SCROLL

CONDITIONS OF THE GIFT

Advico has been received that His Majesty the King has been nleased to approve of the issue of a memorial platiue and scroll to the next-of-kin of those who have fallen in the war, and to thoso whoso deaths were attributable to tho war. The gift is intended as a solace for bereavement suffered -and as a memento. The plaque in bronzo and scroll will bo given to the actual next-of-kin of tho soldier at the time of distribution of tho memento (not the next-of-kin of tho original next-of-kin, who may havo died in tho meantime) in the following order :-(l) Widow, (2) eldest surviving son, (3) eldest surviving daughter, (4) father, (9) mother, (6) eldest surviving brother, (7) eldest surviving sister, (8) eldest surviving half-brother, (9) eldest surviving half-sister. Where there are no relatives of the above degrees, the mementoes will bo given to relatives of the deceased in the following order:-(10) Paternal grandfather, (11) paternal grandmother, (12) maternal grandfather, (13) maternal grandmother, (14) eldest living nephew, (15) eldest living niece, (16) eldest living uncle on father's side, (17) eldest living aunt on father's side, (18) oldest living uncle on mother's side, (19) eldest living aunt on mother's side. In tho event of (14) and (15) being children of tender voors, the memento may bo presented to their guardian to preserve for them. The scroll is of thick paper, in tho form of a rectangle, approximately 11 5-lKin. long by 7 7-lGin. wide. It bears the following inscription:— He whom this Scroll commemori ates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, loft all that was dear to them, endured hardship, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men. by the path of duty and selfsacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those that come after Bee to it . that his name be not forgotten. This is followed by an inscription of tho soldier's name and regiment. The whole inscription is surmounted by a device including tho Royal Arms in colour, with the initials of His Majesty, the King. The scrolls will be accompanied by the following letter from Buckingham Palace, over ffis Majesty the King's signature:—"l join with my grateful peoplo in sendinp: you this memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War." The mementoes will be distributed direct from Baso Records, Wellington, as soor as they are available, and individual applications are not necessary.
