The Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister of Public Works) will leave on Saturday for Auckland and Dargaville, returning on Friday. Nowton (Conciliation Commissioner) left for Christehnrcli hst night, en route to Greymouth, to preside at a sitting of the typographical dispute. Ho subsequently will visit Blenheim ajid Nelson in connection with industrial disputes. Tho name of Captain T. E. Y. Seddon, 13th Now Zealand Regiment, hns been brought to tho notice of the Secretary of State for War for valuable sen-ices rendered in the United States of America m connection with the war.

The late Mr. William Brown, whose death occurred at the Wellington hospital on Wednesday as a result of injuries reemved in a tram accident, was an old and respected citizen of Wellington, havmg lieon particularly well known in chess circles and as a life-member of the Wellington Working Men's Club. A native of England, ho enrao out to New Zealand many years ago, and was subsequently a member of tho firm of Messrs. M'Ewen. Brown, and Kitto, mercers and hatters. He was also in the omptov of Messrs. Charles Hill and Sons, and in more recent years was engaged at tho AVelliugton Woollen Company, Jervois Quay. Deceased, who was -81 years of age, suffered from failing sight. He leaves two sons, both in Australia, and n. daughter-in-law is Mrs. TuckwellBrown. of Wellington. His wife predeceased him by twelve months. Constables Davine and Toeker, of the Tarnnaki Street police station, have been transferred to Masterton and Ncleon respective!*/. Constable Withers, of tho Mount Cook Nation, Ims been transferred to Greymouth. On tho motion of the chairman (Mr. F. Castle), the AVellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board decided yesterday to 6cnd a letter of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mr. W. Galloway, -who waß a member of the lward for some years. Mr. Castle said that the deceased gentleman had earned the respect and good will of the members of the board.

Mr. William Smart, who is retiring after a lengthy and eminently successful career as superintendent engineer to tho Union Stenm Ship Company, was the truest at Port Chalmers of a representaive gathering of the engineering profession on Tuesday. There were also present a number of the heads of the departments of the Union Company's extensive ship repairing works at Port Chalmers. The chairman (Mr. J. M'Lachlan), in proposing tho guest of the evening's health, eulogised the qualities which- had made Mr. Smart so esteemed by his staff ashore and afloat, and by all who had come.in contact with him as the superintendent engineer of tho Union Steam Ship Company. During Mr. Smart's seventeen years in Port Chalmers they had learned to respect and honour him, also the engineers, and on their behalf it was with pleasure he would ask Mr. Smart to accept a barometer and a pair of field-glasses as small mementos of their esteem and good wishes. Complimentary remarks were also mado by other gentlemen present.
