WAIRARAPA NOTES
Eight fresh eases of influenza were reported yesterday within the borough of Mnsterton, and six at Martinborougli. There_are at present four influenza patients in the Jfnsterton .Hospitul. The warm weather of the past, day or two has hnd a beneficial, effect, and generally the outbreak seems to be subsiding. It is understood that the Masrcrtim Dairy Company is to erect a dairy factory'at To Whniti for the use of the soldier settlers.
Killinz operations at the Waingawa Meat Works recommenced yesterday' after a week's inactivity. During the month ended March 20 a total of .C 1043 19s, was passed for payment through various channels by the Masterton Branch of the Hepatization Department. Of this, five business loans absorbed .81200, eight furniture loans X4G!) lis. 3d., and one loan for tools of trade ,£lO os. Sd. The wages _ of 41 trainees on farms were subsidised, involving an expenditure of .£207 12s. 3d. One nustenance erant was made. The erection of workers' dwellings at tho Laurent Settlement,, Masterton, U proceeding slowly, the builder's chief difficulty being a shortage of timber nnd joinery. Tenders will shortly be called for the second batch of houses, the lnnd for which has' already been purchased. According to the Masterton branch of the Labour Department there is very little unemployment in the district just now. There are, a number of ensual worlfcrs on the books who will be satisfied with nothing else than scrub-cut-ting. Some difficulty is being experienced in placing the immigrants who arc arriving weekly. The farmers generally are adverse to employing, the men because of insufficient experience.,
There are 21 pupils at the Wairarap.i Soldiers' Training Farm, and owhiK to lack of accommodation further applications from prospective trainees arc not being considered at present. During the coming session the Masterton Progressive League intends to' invite members of Parliament to -visit the Wairavnpa and acquaint themselves with the resources and requirements cf the district.
The I?ev. G. B. Gisnell (.Methodist Church) is leaving Groytown this week for the Auckland district. Ho will be tendered a farewell on Thursday evening.
