LEAGUE FOOTBALL
SATURDAY'S MATCHES. The third round was completed on Saturday in fine weather; Suburbs and hewtown, the two unbeaten teams, played a drawn gamo, and Petono defeated Athletic by U points'to 3, after a good game. SUBURBS (6), NEWTOWN (6). This game was played at Newtown Park, and there was a fair attendance of spectators. The opening stages were marked by some faßt exchanges, but gradually the play resolved itself into a struggle between the forwards, tho ground being against good back play. Half-way through Scott picked up in a loose rush, and scored for Suburbs. The kick failed. Even play followed, until Dentice robbed Aamodt (Suburbs full-back) of the ball, and raced over. There was no further score beforo half-time. The second half ivaß a repetition of the first. Unfortunately a good deal of feeling was shown, and this lielpsd to mar the display of both teamß. Suburbs were the flrßt to score. Tho forwards worked down- to Newtown's twenty-five, iVhero Lynch picked up and passed to Itigby, who beat several opponents, and passed to Salisbury, who scorcd. This reverse roused Newtown, and after some strenuous play Pollock -picked up in tho ruck and workhis way across. No further score being registered, the gamo ended with honours even.
PETONE (11), ATHLETIC (3). A strong wind blowing straight down tho ground spoilt play in this game to a large extent. Petone won the to«B, and with the wind in their favour had all the beßt of matters, and it was only the fine display of the Athletic forwards that ltept them out. Baulko, an ex-Australian player, had- three magnificent shots at goal, from five, three, and ' two yards beyond the half-way line, failing by inchoß.' Ho eventually kicked goal from near half-way. .Tust before-half-timo Zimmerman scored from a pussinir rush. On changing ends it was expected Athletic would have matters their own way, but their efforts in the first half told, and they tired badly. A good piece of dribbling by Dawe and Carrol let the latter Bcore for Athletic. _ In the closing BtagCß Porter and Zimmerman added trieß for Petone. Mr. A. House was referee.
