SATURDAY'S MATCHES
The cold southerly of Saturday afternoon did not make things pleasant for playcra or spectators, but the senior games were very evenly contested. Institute, at the park, beat Diamonds by 3 goals to 1. Porirua and Marißt, and Y.M.O.A. A and South Wellington drew. 2 and 3 each respectively. Hospital beat Swifts bv 3 to nil. Thistle beat Petono 4 to 2, and Y.M.O.A. B beat Brooklyn 9 to 1.
INSTITUTE (3) V. DIAMONDS (1). This game provided poor football. Institute were superior to their opponents in every department, and played an excellent gome throughout, both individually and collectively. Their combination surpassed that of the Black team, and tno work of the backs, particularly against the wind, was very creditable. Smith, at outside right, was not quite up to form; Diamonds in the first spell made the mistake of kicking the ball too high, with the result that it was carried back frequently, and in the second half they indulged too much in long shots instead of passing rußhes, With the wind in their favour they should have held their own, but failed oven to do this. Auld, their contre half, put in a lot of hard work, playing all over the field. Dufly and Livcraago were responsible for most of thn forwards' efforts. while Browning, at left full-back, played quite the best game of his side.
Institute, 'playing; with the wind and with the sun behind them, put Diamonds ou the defensive from the outset. Thoy soon settled to combined effort in which the new contre forward was prominent, and mado several attacks which proved futile, until after about ten minutes' play. J. Smith carried the ball down to striking distanco and shot. The keeper stopped it, but a weak kick out returned tho ball to Smith (centre), who,' coming at a great pace, banged it through. An attack hv the Diamonds was stopped by off-side play. The kick sent Halley away, and he put in a hot shot which was saved 'at the expense of a corner. Tho corner boro no fruit, and tho Blacks went off on a raid which reached M'Qirr. He took possession and had passed midfield when lio nnocared to have been tripped. Tho refereo awarded a free kick, and Ross converted. The keeper mado no effort to save, tho sun shining in his face making judgmlont very difficult. Institute. 2; Diamonds, 0. Both teams brightened up and honours for some time were, about equal. From a goal kick Diamonds got away and looked like scoring, but after an interesting struggle of several minutes' duration near the goal Halley relieved with a neat pass to M'Arthur, who sent tho ball 1 011 to J. Smith. He returned to Porter, who narrowly mißsed. Activities wero oonflned to Diamonds' territory for a time until M'Glrr nut in a bad shot and missed. This relieved the pressure, and a pretty break by Livorsago and Dufly ended in the former notching a goal. Liversage took possession up field and got up to a handy position, when Boss intercepted. He fell, and liiversago took tho leather on, and put a pretty shot iust under tho bar. Institute, 2; Diamonds, 1. Diamonds now mado a determined effort to get square and worried Rosb several times, but he was always reliable. Duffy made the final effort before half-time, anil looked certain to succeed when off-side stopped him. Tho spell ended shortly afterwards. ' Judicious passing bv tho Institute team confined tho early play in tlio second half to tho Blacks' half more than might have been expected. Diamonds did not make the most of their opportunities, and no Bcore resulted uutil near on time, when Institute added another goal, Malln being beaten with an almost impossible shot. Institute, 3; Diamonds, 1. Mr. Lithgow controlled the gamo.
