GROCERS' DISPUTE

BEFORE CONCILIATION COUNCIL. The adjourned hearing of the Wellington Grocers' dispute enmo before the Conciliation Council yesterday. The Commissioner (Mr. W. Newton) was in the chair. The assessors for The employers were Messrs. H. D. Bennett, E. Read, and H. Wardell, and for the employees Messrs, J. H. Mortensen, C. Sims, find E. M'Keen. Mr. W. Gronfell appeared as agent for the employers. The men's demands are for a 44-'bour week, and the following rates of pay:— First year, £1 10s.; second year, £2; third year, £2 12s. Gd.; fourth year, 7f:..Gd.; fifth year, M 2s. 6d.; after five years' service, The following holidajys are requested:—Anniversary Day, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday, King's Birthday, Anzac Day, Peaae Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. In addition, an annual holiday of 12 working days is demanded. Under the present award the a'iiop assistants receive a wage of ,£3 }Gs. 3d., including war bonus, and the 'working hours are set down at 52 per week. The details of the dispute werte discussed, in committee. No agreement was reached with Tegard to hourfi. wages, anfl holidays, which matters will bo referred to the Arbitration Court.- An agreement was arrived at with regard to general conditions, including provision for under-rate workers, and preference to unionists.'
