A son of Dr. Falconer, medical superintendent at the Diinediji Hospital, was among the visitors at that, institution on Tuesday to witness the visit of tho Prince of Waies. The boy was in possession of a rather ourious relic, a baton passed on'to him by his grandfather on the boy's first birthday—Mav 15, 1911 (says the "Otago Daily Times"). His grandfather explained that thq-staff had belonged to tho Ind's great-great-grand-father, James .Murray, whoso staff _it was as.a member of the Society of Hiirh Constables of Edinburgh. This society was instituted in 1011, but pno branch dated back to tho lltli or 12th century, when David I of Scotland founded the Abbey of Bolyrood, The mombora are elected from well-known and respected residonts of Edinburgh. It is tho duty of tho members to be ready when called upon by ..the Lord Provost, and magistrates to attend as a guard of honour at Holyrood Palaco whcn t Royalty is there, also tg attend the King's Lord High Commissioner to tho Church of Scotland, on the occasion of the election of Scottish peers to the House of Lords when tho freedom of tho city is presented to notablo people, etc. The .Tames Murray mentioned abovo belonged to Calton Ward, No. 1 of High Notables. Q.R. on the baton probably dates from King Georgo 111, and probably the holder was in attendance during tho visit of King George IV to Edinburgh in 1822. Ho was born .in 1782.jind died in.1826.
