NOTES AND COMMENTS

By Glencoe,

In bygone years the jumping season used to open with the Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting, but with the J.gmont Club catering tor jumpers tlio seaßon now opens at Hawera. Owing to a number of horses being held up in tho south, the Wanganui Club will lose a low of the jumpers whose owners intended them to race at. Wanganui to-day. '{-ho latest news from the river town is, that the weather is fine and the going is expected to be good for to-day's races. The card will be commenced at 11.15 a.m. with the Borough Handicap, six furlongs. Biudle. 9sf. 21b.. has tho fi.ameweight which he ran third with on tho second day at Trentham, and 80-Pcep, Bst. 12lb„ is only carrying one pound nioro than she scored with at Awapuui, but they are solid weights, and may null theso horses up to-day. The public may prefer the consistent ituddy, Vst. IMb., and Kinsem, 7st. lib., each of whom ha 3 raced well lately. It Lochclla, list. 61b., is started in ths Hack Hurdles, there will be probably a rush to get on the Great Northern Hurdles favourite. 0. Christie has thu National Steeplechase winner looking very well, and ho is sure to be much fancied in whatever he starts in to-day. As there is only a 51b. penalty at Ellcrslio for a win in the Century. Hurdles perhaps tho Duuedin-oivned gelding will start in the longer race, as he would be improved more than 51b. by the public schooling. Mr. U. F. Variance's 'chaser Luke niado' such an immession at Hawera. where ho won a double, that the public is not likely to overlook him in the Hack Steeples to-day. He has a big weight, but he ia built on weight-carrying lines, and the opposition is not strong. It seems to be generally held that Luperino will not contest the Century Hurdles, and if Lochella is also absent tho public may support Omohu and Goldstream in tlio order named. The latter has been working very freely, and has. won all his bouts on the tracks. He won both hurdlo races on this course at the Cup Meeting in February. The biggest field of the day is engaged in tho l'urua Hack Handicap, one mileand as the course is only a small ono the luck of the draw and a good run all the way will be necessary for any of tho horses if they are to have a chance to win. Two useful hacks are Flight Commander, Bst. 61b., and Achillean, 7st. 21b. Both havo raced well in their last starts. Master Strowan, list. 131b., is held up at Riccarton, and cannot be at Wanganui today. Old Jlungindi, list. 101b. has not won a race for some years, and it >,cems too much to expect him to show up today. Gladful, list. 51b., is a younger horse, and is bred well enough to do anything. Gang Awa' will be an absentee. I'ankee Jack and Maractotara, both of whom are on tho lOst. 131b. mark, are two likely ones to upset the favourite, Wirokino. The pair named have done a lot of schooling, and done it well, but they aro making their first appearance in a steeplechase. Rude scored so well in the Flying Handicap at Hawera. that ho «nay carry the bulk of the support in the Connolly Handicap. This event, is run over a ten furlongs course, and should suit both Budo and Punka.
