_4 —:— MR. P. LEVI APPOINTED CHAIRMAN 07 . COUNCIL MEMORIAL FOR THE FALLEN Thos'j present at the monthly meeting of tho council of the Victoria College last evening were Messrs. P. Levi, W. A. Evans, Clement Watson, 11. A. Wright, M.P., F. H. Bakewell, T. Forsyth, W. Lomas, H. E. 0. Smith, C. H. Taylor, and Professor Somnierville. Mr. P Levi was appointed chairman of the council, Mv. Clement Watson intimating that ho did not wish to stand for re-election. A hearty vote of Hianks was passed to Mr. Watson for his ser : vices. Mr. J. 'S. Tennant wrote thanking the council for appointing him professor. It was an honour that ho felt euro would be appreciated by the whole of the teaching profession. Professor P. W. Robertson thanked the council for granting him the sum of £200. to cover his expenses in coming from England. A lettjer was received from the Massachusetts Institute thanking the-council for a letter of condolence in connection with the denth of tho late Professor Maclaurih. The Utter would be placed among the many fine tributes to the deceased received by the institute. M\ W. A. Evans was appointed treasurer to the council for the currentyear. Th'e Estimates. The estimates provide for an expenditure during the year 1920-21. of .£21,938, whilst the revenue was estimated to amount to .£21,307, which left a deficit of ,m\. In explaining the deficit Mr. Watson stated that it did not. mean that the council had come, to the end of its tether, as during the last five years there had been a good deal saved o'no way and another, notably in apparatus that was unobtainable, which had provided them with a fund of ,£SOOO or ,£6OOO. which could be spent on current college expenses. The estimates were passed. ■ Tho May payments amounted to £UiS, which left a balance.in the Bank of New Zealand of .£1956 13s. 3d. . In addition to that there was .£2314 15s. sd. in the P.O. Savings Bank, making <£4283 17s Ud. at call. The School of • Economics account at the P.O. Savings Bank stood at ,£727 lGs, ,10d. College Memorial. The design of a stained glass memorial window, proposed to be erected,in the window space opposite the library as a memorial to students of the collegj who fell in the war, was submitted to the council. •It was explained by tli» registrar (Mr. Eobieson) that there was already a fund of i£lOG in hand for the purposes of a memorial, which 6uin had been handed over to the council from the war fund by tho Minister of Internal Affairs either to be used as a memorial or as an annual prize. . The Minister, and, he thought the council, favoured the former form of 'memorial. There was also, he undeiitood, another ,£3O to come from the Students' Association, which would give them.about .£llO. Tho estimated cost of the window (as designed) would be .£7OO. Tho chairman said that the idea was th.it the rest of the money required would übe raisrd by subscriptions from the students, ex-students, and others interested in the university. Mr. Clement Watson was of opinion that the memorial was a fitting one and would be of value to the college. On his motion it was agreed, to accept the memorial window as designed.
