AUSTRALIAN TARIFF
PEEFERENCB TO BEITISH MANUFACTURERS. ' (Rec. May 17, 0.25 a.m.) London, May 15. Mr. W. Ai Watt (Federal Treasurer), in ai article in tlie "Sunday Times." says:—"Tho Australian tariff gives substantial preference to British manufacturers, There is no reason why such an arrangement should be one-sided. Australian producers of wool, moat, and wheat ought to be able to sell on tho British market to better advantage than Argentine and other_ foreign competitors, though not ncccssarily by tariff adjustment?. The problem is difficult, but not unsolvablo. To admit tho contrary is a confession that Imperial statesmanship is bankrupt." Tho article emphasises Australia's neod of population and the Imperial necessity of developing emigration within the Empire.—Aus,N.Z. Cable Assn.
