A WARNING TO BUTCHERS
The law provides that all meat offered for sale for human consumption in the city must have been slaughtered at a public abattoir. The law, however, is not observed as strictly as it should be, and for purposes of warning the Stock Department proceeded yesterday against George Patrick Costigan, of the Hutt Meat Company (whose slaughteryord is at Taita) on a charge of selling meat for human consumption that was slaughtered elsewhere than at ft public abattoir. Arthur Thomas Whale, butcher, Kent Terrace, was also charged, for he purchased Id lambs slaughtered at Costigau's yard. Evidence was given 'by T. C. Webb and Arthur Carr, of itlie Stock Department, who mentioned that the defendants had been previously warned. It was admitted that the meat was in good condition and perfectly wholesome. Both defendants pleaded guilty. Costigan was fined .£lO and costs, and Whale ,£5 and costs. Mr. C. B. O'Donnell appeared for Costigan.
